From the writer that brought us The Amazing Joy Buzzards, Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors is off to a promising start. The high concept is basically “Harry Potter for supervillains,” with a healthy dash of The OC —and it works. While Smith employs many of the familiar tropes from four-color comics, he also delves into some manga influences and adds a flavor and humor that’s very reminiscent of Joy Buzzards (this is a good thing).
The first part of the issue, the “secret origin” of the school, is a little less compelling than when we meet the kids and some of the instructors. While an origin story is a necessary evil, this issue may have been better served by putting its best foot forward and start with the introduction to Kid Nefarious. The characterization and, especially, the design of this young megalomaniac, along with classmates such as Mummy Girl and the Skull Brothers, are really refreshing and compelling.
The end of the book —a cordial conversation between a hero and a villain, planning some public fight—hints at an overarching premise of “nothing you’ve ever believed is true,” which seems premature for a brand new series. But, just as it’s hard to predict that my favorite aspect, the kids themselves, will stay as compelling as in their intro, it’s patently unfair to judge this foreshadowing.
