Three childhood friends who spent their youths at a local carnival now devote their below-average adulthoods to working at the same floundering amusement park. Upon discovery of what appears to be a Satanic book, two of the guys request the third pledge his soul to the Devil should he fail to uphold his end of a trivial bet. Little do any of them know, the book serves as a binding agreement, and when Curt fails to deliver his debt, a portal sucks him into Hell. Ever the good friends, Remy and Augie jump in after him, plunging themselves into the depths of the netherworld in hopes of rescuing their best, albeit conniving, buddy.

Directors Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman’s Hell and Back is a prime example of the Sisyphean challenges faced by all North American animated features targeted at adults. In short, there’s comparatively little audience for such pictures. But the debate isn’t merely so simple. Other markets—in particular Japan—have proven time and again that animated films can succeed tremendously when made for almost exclusively older audiences. They eschew the restrictions of CGI or live-action filmmaking, while infusing their plots with extremely mature scenarios and deeply complex characters. Yet, American audiences—as a whole—are far less receptive to animated features that are not family-friendly. This is exactly the territory into which Hell and Back lands.

The film doesn’t quite know how to succeed, or with whom. Given its profusion of raunchy, R-rated, largely sex-focused jokes, it’s undeniably not for children. Yet, it’s also not particularly clever enough to stick with many entrenched adults—or, frankly, to keep their attention. Hell and Back’s prime demographic is teenagers, high schools who dig a boner or sex joke, but who also aren’t concerned with deep storytelling or three-dimensional characters. Outside this window, there’s little opportunity for Hell and Back to strike even a fleeting chord with viewers. And this brings us back to the inherent limitation of American adult animated films. We simply don’t know how to harness the medium, and therefore tend to expect limited returns.

The proof is in the quality of the product. T.J. Miller, Rob Riggle, and Nick Swardson voice the trio of misfit amigos. Bob Odenkirk is animated (no pun intended) and affable as ever as The Devil. Mila Kunis and Susan Sarandon get in on the action, as Deema the demon and Barb the Angel, respectively. Danny McBride plays Orpheus, one of the few other humans to cross the plane into the underworld. Even the instantly vocally recognizable H. Jon Benjamin of Archer fame has a cameo. Still, despite this impressive display of comedic prowess, Hell and Back is a far cry from something you would sell your soul for.
