Tedeschi Trucks Band featuring Trey Anastasio

Layla Revisited (Live At LOCKN’)

Fantasy

Sep 02, 2021 Web Exclusive

It was a complete surprise to those in attendance at the LOCKN’ Festival. On 8/24/19, for a set billed simply as “Tedeschi Trucks Band featuring Trey Anastasio,” the audience was treated to a performance of the entire Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album, the classic 1970 release by Derek and the Dominoes that featured Eric Clapton and Duane Allman.

For guitarist Derek Trucks, who served as a member of The Allman Brothers Band (and is the nephew of the late ABB drummer Butch Trucks), and for singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi, who was born on the day of the album’s release in November of 1970, the Layla connection is personal. The 2-CD/3-LP Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN’) presents the full Layla performance, along with a studio recording of “Thorn Tree in the Garden.” Having performed the full Mad Dogs & Englishmen album at LOCKN’ in a 2015 tribute to Joe Cocker, it’s not surprising that Tedeschi Trucks Band pulled off the electrifying run through the Layla album that is captured here. Joined here by Phish’s Trey Anastasio and guitarist/vocalist Doyle Bramhall II, Tedeschi Trucks Band brought “Bell Bottom Blues,” “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?,” the highly anticipated title track, and the rest to an audience that offered rapturous approval of the night’s unexpectedly special setlist.
