Scott Ian is a guitarist for the band Anthrax. Sam Kieth is the brilliant, unique comic book artist/creator behind such properties as The Maxx, My Inner Bimbo, and Zero Girl. Lobo is a character created by Keith Giffen, a feral, space-faring, tough-talking, motorcycle-riding bad-ass bounty hunter that’s often played for laughs, notably in a couple of ‘90s books written by Alan Grant and superbly illustrated by Simon Bisley.
Stick with those ones. Not even the oft-whimsical, stylized art of Kieth can save this thing.
Never has Lobo’s dialog been more perfunctory. Never has the plot of a Lobo book been so dull. The whole thing is so “paint by numbers” that it boggles the mind it even got published. A successful Lobo book alternately terrifies and amuses with its ultraviolent, force-of-nature protagonist stuck in a Looney Tunes sort of world. This book is basically faux tough talk and hollow humor.
To be clear: This. Is. Terrible. And for $7, you may as well buy one of the Grant/Bisley collections on eBay. Or an Anthrax album. (www.dccomics.com)
