Philly power-pop quintet Free Energy really loves the ‘70s, and that adoration for a bygone era is apparent on their freewheeling sophomore record, Love Sign. Every track is either about finding love late at night or dancing into the morning. Legendary producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Hold Steady) helmed the boards for this effort, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to punk-rock grit. Songs such as “Dance All Night” and “Girls Want Rock” are pretty self-explanatory party jams that work on a gut level. The interplay between the guitars and bass is polished and the percussion resembles a steady heartbeat that quickens during the glass-raising choruses. It’s rare that any of these cuts reach the ecstatic heights of their 2010 debut, Stuck On Nothing, though. (www.freeenergymusic.com)
