Only a few months after releasing an album with his world music collective Fool’s Gold, lead singer Luke Top‘s is back with his solo debut Suspect Highs, a surprising step back from the vibrant howls of his best-known project.

Top turns introspective with this understated new collection of love songs, relegating the familiar Afro-Caribbean and Middle Eastern flourishes and lyrics in Hebrew to the past. Dreamy piano notes, the pitter-patter of bongo drums and breezy guitars drift along over Top’s signature warble in this soundtrack to the perfect spring afternoon.

For as exotic as the music of Fool’s Gold is, Luke Top à la carte is instead trading on the familiar warmth and nostalgia of music from a time long gone. The sound of sweetly spun chamber pop and Top’s musings on romance are a far cry from the rhythmic, intoxicating work of Fool’s Gold, but it’s just as passionately crafted and exciting to hear.
