VPI Harmony

Mexican Summer

The debut record from Atlanta-based band Mood Rings is steeped in the nostalgic dreaminess their name suggests. VPI Harmony dives in and out of dreary grunge explosions and shoegazey meditations, and sounds familiar enough without getting tired or unoriginal. Thankfully, the bleached-out synth vibrations and dizzying vocals are balanced with enough glittery melodies to keep the songs from growing too stale, even if they do blur into each other a little bit.

It is an album that would sound comfortable in the backdrop of a sun-drenched summer afternoon. “The Line,” the album’s third single, jumps out with a darkly groovy chorus chanted amid hazy rhythmic bursts and reverb-laden guitar hooks. An almost perfect amalgamation of atmospheric noise and stuck-in-your-head indie pop. (www.moodrings.bandcamp.com)
