Back for a fourth album after a three-year hiatus, Scandinavian indie pop maestros Hater spring into action on Mosquito as if they’ve never been away. The album primarily offers muscular indie rock, such as opener “Landslide,” with a rhythmic pattern redolent of peak-era Kent, or even Travis. Equally strong examples abound. “This Guy” is carried along by a great distorted bass riff, the title track has a powerful guitar sound which emphasizes the cinematic chorus, and “Still Thinking of You” shifts from an atmospheric verse into a bright and jangly chorus.

The vocals of Caroline Landahl are a highlight throughout the album. Any Scandinavian band with a strong female lead vocal has the possibility of facing comparison with The Cardigans. The evidence of Hater’s output thus far, of which Mosquito is the highlight, is that they are on the perfect trajectory. The breadth shown by tracks such as “Angel Cupid,” “Stinger,” and “Sad Eyes” adds much to the record and shows that Hater are a renewed force to be reckoned with on their welcome return. By the time rolling closer “Last Summer I’ll Spill,” with its anthemic chorus, fades the listener is left hoping that it is not so long until the next installment of the Hater story is told for our listening pleasure.
