Said The Whale

It’s a slog, sometimes, picking through the generic to find the specific, more so to find the specifically good. It’s not that there’s anything truly awful about Said The Whale or this, their sixth album and first since the departure of their longtime rhythm section, but there’s also little to be said in favor of them either. There are some pleasant tunes here, sure; “UnAmerican” is kinda memorable and has good intentions but the Vancouver group stumble with bland production, anonymous instrumentation, and melodies and parts that simply lack distinction.
The title track has pop chart potential, “Record Shop” rocks politely, and “Shame” has a diet-emo charm to it but otherwise this is a record couched in conservative choices and smoothed edges. It’s nothing you’ll be returning to after an initial listen, which is a shame as songwriting duo Ben Worcester and Tyler Bancroft are clearly skilled—just perhaps not at anything you can fall in love with, at least not on Cascadia.
