Secret Identity Crisis: Comic Books & The Unmasking of Cold War America

Secret Identity Crisis is an interesting meditation on sequential art as a reflection of, and sometimes commentary on, society. Costello, a Professor of Political Science at Chicago’s Saint Xavier University, chooses to juxtapose the growth of the comic industry with the sticky concept of the so-called American “national identity,” by using the ongoing stories of some of Marvel’s biggest names as a giant funhouse mirror to warp and shine light on current events and attitudes. The book primarily focuses on Marvel superheroes, with a heavy emphasis on Iron Man, The Hulk, Nick Fury, and, of course, Captain America.
A few of the author’s observations seem obvious, and by the time he gets to explaining how Marvel’s Civil War and the death of Steve Rogers are allegories for The Patriot Act and the War on Terror, you might be ready for your own crisis. But, it’s definitely worth the read (although I’d recommend taking it on piecemeal) and will satisfy fans of poly sci and comic history. As a bonus, it provides additional ammunition for any Scott McCloud fan who’s gonna throw down over the importance of the art form. (www.continuumbooks.com)

Hi,
I’ve heard that meditation and visualization can help cure problematic things within the body. Every time i try to meditate instead of visualizing what i want i visualize what i’m afraid of and what i have. Its uncontrollable. I try to calm my mind and do a self-hypnosis if you will to clear my mind completely and visualize positively but my thoughts seem to be contradictiv and sparatic even during meditation. Can anyone give me any advice on how to meditate/visualize properly and positively?
