Silver Streak Comics No. 24 is Image Comics’ second entry into its “The Next Issue Project,” wherein Image creators create the “next issue” of long-gone Golden Age series centered on public domain characters.
Silver Streak Comics No. 24 is a slightly oversized comic with a card-stock cover drawn by Erik Larsen that pays tribute to the Golden Age origins and sensibilities. The issue contains a handful of stories that range in tone and feel, but not quality. They are all at least pretty good, pretty entertaining, and nice art—though in the case of Paul Grist’s Silver Streak story, quite stylized. While it’s probably my favorite overall, I would guess non-comics aficionados might think it too cartoony. Story-wise, too, I liked it best; while Larsen’s Daredevil story is ably rendered in his fun, kinetic style, the story is a little abrupt. Joe Keatinge’s Kelly the Cop one-pager is a dash of modern angst thrown into the mix that might just be the spice that holds the book together.
The best aspects of the issue could be Golden Age-style advertisements. Overall, it’s a breath of fresh air, and enjoyable, if a little forgettable. (www.imagecomics.com)
