WHY?

Sod in the Seed EP

WHY?’s last stretch in the studio produced a powerful one-two punch—the genre-bending Alopecia and its downbeat sister record, Eskimo Snow—that’ll be a challenge to top. Their long-awaited return to recording has similarly produced two releases: a thus-far untitled album seeing release this fall, and this taste-whetting EP.

Yoni Wolf sounds much more upbeat than when we last left him, but his dry wit hasn’t dulled. The opening title track takes Twitter’s ever-present #firstworldproblems hashtag and spins it into a five-minute rapped lament, while the chiming “Twenty Something” is a warped love song with lyrics surreal enough to pick apart indefinitely. This short EP feels like a tease, but its quality points in a positive direction for the full-length coming just around the corner. (www.whywithaquestionmark.com)
