Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection

Apr 06, 2021 Web Exclusive
Nashville pedal steel session star Spencer Cullum’s excellent solo debut is a fascinating combination of 1960s London and 2020s Nashville. Originally from England but now living and working in the states, Cullum has made a name for himself playing with a wide variety of artists including Miranda Lambert, Caitlin Rose, and Deer Tick. Now he is showcasing some of his favorite influences, including Krautrock, psych-pop, and the Canterbury Scene, with an album of brainy folk songs brought to life with the help of collaborators including guitarist Sean Thompson and multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds. Rose, Andrew Combs, Erin Rae, Annie Williams, and James “Skyway Man” Wallace also appear.
Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection is another addition to the long string of outstanding releases from yk Records, an extraordinary label dedicated to documenting the best of Nashville’s often overlooked indie music scene. It’s a great choice for fans of Nick Drake, Ummagumma-era Pink Floyd, and The Grateful Dead’s Warner Brothers albums. Check out “Jack of Fools,” “The Tree,” and “Dietrich Buxtehude.” (www.spencercullumscoincollection.com)
