SWAPS
SWAPS is an experimental instrumental four-piece consisting of Deerhoof guitarists Ed Rodriguez and John Dieterich, XBXRX guitarist Steve Touchstone (here going by Touchston), and Secret Chiefs 3 drummer/percussionist Ches Smith. And depending on your mood, the sound the three of them make can be viewed as either random percussive mishmash or genius shapeshifting avant garde.
The band’s debut, released on beautiful green 10” vinyl, consists of two songs, “Pair Bonds” and “Aether Defects,” both which run over 11 minutes, and each which is a mind-fuck combination of instruments that carom off one another like pool balls in a smoky billiards joint populated solely by schizophrenics. The first third of “Pair Bonds” vacillates between calm chiming guitars and raucous cacophony. A few silent seconds at approximately the 4-minute mark precede some fabulous skittering guitar interplay that segues into what sounds almost like church bells. This is followed by hazy white noise-filled ethereal sound that escalates, drops back to silence, and then psychedelics its noodley way to the track’s end. “Aether Defects” is heavy on wild and wired guitar squall through four minutes, before the bottom drops out to minimalist near quietude. Of course, this doesn’t last. What could otherwise be described as a drum solo is featured prominently in the track’s middle, and the song ends with what sounds like fuzzed-out instrumental tinkering.
In sum, SWAPS may be experimental and avant garde, but it is so in the best possible ways. The noise this band produces is both inscrutable and somehow accessible.
