To paraphrase its creator, Sweet Tooth is a mix of Bambi and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, an unrelentingly tale of fathers and sons in the wake of an apocalyptic disaster.
The debut issue, written and drawn by Jeff Lemire, offers an enticing introduction to the world of Gus, a 10-year-old human/animal hybrid. Details are sparse, but Gus’s mother died as a result of some kind of pandemic that struck around the time the boy was born. Gus’s father joins her not long after the story begins, while Gus—one of the few remaining hybrid children—is being hunted, though by whom and why remains to be seen. But there are hints that whoever is hunting the boy may want more out of him than just his antlers.
There are few real narrative details here and the whole thing reads like a breeze, hinting at a wealth of details not yet seen, to be teased out in future issues. And, while this issue only goes for $1, it’s intriguing enough that it’s probably worth shelling out a few more bucks for the next issue. (www.dccomics.com/vertigo/)

The hype machine sold Sweet Tooth #1. It was pretty good, but I’m hoping we’ll see a little more happening in issue #2.
Then again, I ought have a little more faith in Lemire, he’s pretty damned good.
