Terrible Human Beings

Declaring Pixies-inspired songwriting and naming a track “Black Francis” may get people listening to The Orwells’ third record, Terrible Human Beings, but it may not be enough to keep them listening.
There are definite similarities to the ‘80s alt-rock icons. “Buddy” and “Heavy Head” borrow heavily from Pixies’ fast-paced rhythms, short powerful guitar bursts, and punchy vocals. But elsewhere, the energetic mix of scuffed up indie rock only hints at a correlation.
This young band has set their sights high and has certainly taken steps forward with a more focused effort. The spirited tunes are built on hearty drum beats and crunchy, often wily guitars. Some are clever and tight with rough outer edges that erupt with catchy guitar riffs. Others are mediocre, mired in sludgy and ragged garage rock.
Unkempt and heartfelt, Terrible Human Beings shows The Orwells have promise and is a fun joy ride while you’re on it. You just may not feel compelled to repeat the ride very often. (www.theorwells.com)
