The Tallest Man on Earth

Cracker’s 1992 radio hit “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)” famously noted “What the world needs now/is another folk singer/like I need a hole in my head.” For the last 17 years, with a few notable exceptions, I have tended to agree with that sentiment. But after a recent Monday night, following the charming, confident performance of Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man on Earth), I find myself scouring websites and record bins for new folk.

Matsson, a native of Sweden, has been quietly making a name for himself on recent tours with Bon Iver and John Vanderslice. His Smithsonian Folkways-by-way-of-Dylan vocal delivery and deceptively simple, almost Nick Drake-esque guitar work combine to create an incredibly accessible performance style. And, his set, showcasing much of last year’s under-rated debut LP, Shallow Grave, arrives road-honed with an apparent off-the-cuff brilliance, including startling intimate takes on “Honey Won’t You Let Me In,” “The Sparrow and the Medicine,” and “Where Do My Bluebirds Fly.” Perhaps the most successful song of the night was the unreleased “King of Spain” which concluded with a howling stomp that drew delighted smiles, applause, and whistles from the crowd. As Matsson left the stage with fans calling for “Encore!” I knew that I was headed to the Internet then to the record store.

Late summer and fall will find him touring the U.K. and Western Europe. Check out a show and I’ll bet you’ll find yourself looking for more folk as well. (www.myspace.com/thetallestmanonearth)

Why are you so LATE on the tallest man UTR?  I’m disappointed and mad at you for it.  I hope you do a feature on him when his next album is release!
