Making Patterns Rhyme: A Tribute to Duran Duran
Modern/Manimal
Sep 11, 2014 Web Exclusive
Let it go on record that proceeds from this Duran Duran tribute go to Amnesty International. We applaud the efforts that go into producing a charity album; we only wish we could recommend more of the covers contained on it.
Making Patterns Rhyme’s success hinges heavily on your need for these two things: sultry-sounding covers that somehow lose the originals’ mojo, or overstretched electronic deconstructions of Duran Duran pop classics. (Moby’s contribution—a lifeless “Rio”—is both breathy and boring.) A few artists do push some passion into their reinterpretations: Warpaint’s “The Chauffeur” is a moody, rocking cover, and Carina Round’s “Come Undone” builds to a heavy, rumbling second half. These two songs are enough to recoup the cost of entry; consider any others that stand out after that a bonus. The digital edition (reviewed here) also includes Soko, Austra, Beliefs, and others; the vinyl will have an expanded roster. (www.modernrecords.com)
