It may be temporarily impossible to erase the grin from your face while watching Lukas Moodysson’s We Are the Best, because it very thankfully lives up to its lofty title. Bobo and Klara are best friends circa 1982 in Stockholm, just shy of heading to high school and generally unimpressed with school and other typical adolescent things like needling parents and idiot teenage boys. They’ve mastered the punk look but don’t really have a band until they befriend Hedwig, a Christian girl (and acoustic guitar virtuoso) similarly ostracized from her classmates. Moodysson’s sitcom-esque filming (often with a single camera) works to capture the jubilance of youth and the hilarity of the girls as they go about their business. The group’s anthem “Hate the Sport” is inspired by a stuffy gym teacher, and it’s maybe the catchiest thing you’ll hear this year.
