Wet Leg are back with their second album Moisturizer, which reached number one in the album charts. We caught their sold out show at Nottingham’s Rock City…

The stage is dimly lit and smoky. Very very smoky. The band enters the stage, but mostly hidden by the smoke. Then we see Rhian Teasdale dressed in white. She walks to the front of the stage, through the smoke to the mic stand and strikes the “muscle pose.” The crowd love it and loudly cheer as Rhian gets straight into “Catch These Fists”. A song described by Rhian as a “late-night rebuke to pickup artists”. The stage is still very dark and smoky with insanely bright strobing lights. We see Rhian stalk the stage as she shouts the “yeah yeah yeah” refrain.

Then it’s straight into “Wet Dream”, with even more strobe lighting and Rhian has a green translucent guitar. It looks amazing. There’s no chit chat, no conversation, but there’s an instant connection between crowd and band.

Hester Chambers, by comparison to Rhian is shy, quietly stood to the side of the stage. The complete opposite of Rhian. At the front of stage, there’s Ellis Durand on bass and Josh Mobaraki on guitar, perfectly flanking Teasdale. Completing the line-up is Henry Holmes on drums. Wet Leg started as a duo, but have since become a five-piece, after adding the three touring musicians as permanent members of the band.

Time flies as they play the nineteen song set and it’s a wonderful evening. The crowd, I’m glad to see, is a mix of ages, proving Wet Leg’s widespread appeal.

I can’t finish the review without mentioning “Chaise Longue”. The band’s debut single from 2021. The lyric “Is your muffin buttered? Would you like us to assign someone to butter your muffin?” is a direct quotation from the 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls. The first notes spark instant recognition, prompting a shared call-and-response to the band’s tribute to the Big D, and the fretboard erupts into a joyful frenzy as the track intensifies.

This was my first time seeing Wet Leg live and I have to say how incredible and enjoyable they are as a live band. If you get the chance to see them, don’t pass it up.
