When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee #1

BOOM! Studios

Gus Moreno, Jakub Rebelka

Jan 30, 2025 Web Exclusive

Writer Gus Moreno (This Thing Between Us) and artist Jakub Rebelka’s (Cyberpunk) new series follows Father Barrera, a disgraced priest reassigned to the isolated South American town of Puerto Cristina to study the rite of exorcism under the tutelage of the mysterious Father Stygian. It quickly becomes apparent nothing is as it seems and Stygian might not be the best mentor. In this promising first issue, there’s more than enough action and character development to hook any fan of religious horror.

Moreno and Rebelka are an interesting pairing, creating a hypnotic, entrancing rhythm that draws the reader into their dark world. Moreno’s writing is smart, confident, and appears to be leading the story toward a genuine elevation of the exorcism genre. And fans of Rebelka’s cinematic artwork in books like 2018’s Judas will already know he’s got the chops to sustain the foreboding mood necessary to propel Barrera and Stygian along on their journey into the abyss.

The first issue also has beautiful variant covers by other luminaries like Jacob Phillips, Inhyuk Lee, and Jae Lee & June Chung. If there’s a hole in your heart left from the end of Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta’s Outcast, then this title is for you. When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee is off to a smashing start. I’m excited to see where it goes. (https://www.boom-studios.com/series/when-i-lay-my-vengeance-upon-thee/)
