Premiere: Bird Of Youth - “Dad”
Get Off Out May 20th Via Kiam Records
Apr 13, 2016
Bird Of Youth, the Brooklyn-based rock band led by singer/songwriter Beth Wawerna, will be releasing their sophomore album Get Off on May 20th. Get Off was mixed by John Agnello and Phil Palazzolo and is the follow-up to their 2011 debut Defender. Today we’re premiering their song “Dad.” It’s an emotional cornerstone for the album as Wawerna wrote the song after her father passed away. It finds the singer fighting through her emotions to find a sense of peace with the loss.
She had the follow to say abou the song “‘Dad’ is the emotional core of the record and where it all began in a way. I had just spent a month in Arizona taking care of my father in hospice and this is the first song I wrote after his death. So it was written in a kind of numbed haze - a fever dream brought on by a profound sense of grief but also a profound sense of relief that it was over. Looking back on it now, I think of “Dad,” and the act of writing it, as an exorcism - I was expelling something and it was the only way I knew how to make sense of what had just happened to me, and to him.”
