Guys with Kids plays like the dad half of the movie What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Creator Jimmy Fallon focuses on three fathers, one of them divorced, the other two still married.
Anthony Anderson plays the histrionic Gary with four kids. Much like mom-brain, Gary has dad-brain, forgetting everything including where his kids are and what life is like without <kids>. His wife, played by The Cosby Show‘s Tempestt Bledsoe, has the same lines as him, just to solidify the fact that they’re both a mess. Zach Cregger plays Nick, who still behaves like he is in his teen years, much to the chagrin of his stay-at-home wife, played by The Sopranos’ Jamie-Lynn Sigler. A divorced dad with a lot of custody, Chris (Jesse Bradford) is the one staying home while his high-powered attorney ex-wife still calls all the shots.
All the guys act like they are single—not just single, but college (sometimes high school) age single, and childless. More excited by Wii and TV than they are by anything their offspring are doing, there is a certain amount of concern for the children’s wellbeing on the part of the viewer. The grating laugh track works against the show. Even so, the nearly likeable dads on Guys with Kids could almost make it work. (www.nbc.com/guys-with-kids)
