Thirteen-year-old Ricky Baker has been chewed up by the foster system. After deglamorizing vampires in last year’s hilarious What We Do In The Shadows, director Taika Waititi slips into Wes Anderson mode for this Barry Crump adaptation. The bold pop music queues; the way the film is divided into chapters (each introduced by supertitles); the dry humor and characters—especially the foster system stoolie who takes her job far too seriously—all draw parallels to Moonrise Kingdom, a fairly similar tale of young runaways at large. Dig away at all of that heavily-slathered quirk, however, and the film’s quite heartwarming. Neill could play a cranky old bushman in his sleep, but it’s Julian Dennison as Ricky who steals the film as a rap-loving, pre-pubescent gangster wannabe. This kid’s a find.
