Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Blu-ray/DVD
Studio: Universal
Edgar Wright's (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) film adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's popular graphic novel series is an example of what can be done when a visionary director starts with great source material. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is packed with funny dialogue, impressive fight sequences, and probably more video game iconography than any other film in history. The movie stars Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad), in a role that's smack in the middle of his comfort zone, as an unemployed rocker who finds the potential love of his life but is forced to defeat her seven evil past partners in order to explore a relationship. Cera's solid performance is accompanied by a hefty ensemble cast of his peers, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, and Anna Kendrick to name a few. The film also features a fantastic soundtrack and score that smartly lean on both videogame synths and indie rock conventions to round out the film's frozen, nearly mythic setting of Toronto.
Universal's Blu-ray Hi-Def Combo Pack is full of extras starting with DVD and digital copies. There is a huge amount of bonus material, including multiple featurettes on the production, music and marketing of the film, as well as almost half an hour of deleted scenes, such as a fully realized alternate ending. The deluxe release also offers access to an online bonus film (in my case either Tremors or Pitch Black) from their BD-Live set-up. (www.scottpilgrimthemovie.com)
