Torchwood: Miracle Day (Episode Eight: End of The Road)
Starz, Fridays, 10/9 Central
Aug 26, 2011 Web Exclusive
Two episodes. That’s how much time the Torchwood gang has left to save the world from overpopulation, shadowy pharmaceutical companies, and a government who’s moving closer and closer to shoving everyone in the oven and being done with it. Thankfully—after last week’s slogfest—they’re finally getting on with the important business of being heroes.
The episode picks up right were Immortal Sins left off—with Jack heading for a reunion with his long-lost lover Angelo. It’s a brief moment, tempered by the fact that a) Jack is the only man who has mastered living for ages while maintaining his rugged good looks, and b) the world is continuing its breakneck trip to hell in a handbasket. This all would be quite welcome, if it weren’t for the return of Wayne Knight’s Friedkin—easily the series most questionable casting.
Oswald Danes and his publicist Jilly Kitzinger make a welcome return. Danes discovers the meaning behind “Category Zero” (hint: it ain’t pretty), and Kitzinger learns how far she’ll go for a promotion (hint: it also ain’t pretty). Also a welcome addition is Esther, who—after being largely absent from last week’s episode—is forced to content with her past actions and rise to—what could become—a very bloody occasion.
