Kwes’ ambient pop is beguiling in the same way a warm caress from your favorite drink can bring a glow to even the coldest skin. Meantime EP’s tinkling soundbox is just as blurred and smudgy as its indiscernible cover artwork. The clockwork beats of “Lgoyh” push into fuzzy guitar bursts, and “Klee” is a moody burble of minimal house. Single “Bashful” is the standout by a mile: the vocals are synthetic drum beats dipped in a soulful R&B bath that sounds like it was bottled circa 1997. Kwes has been likened to Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, James Blake, and former collaborators The xx. On Meantime, Kwes is anything but bashful. This is a proud statement that is only hampered by its length and obfuscation. Kwes should turn up the analog heat a little more next time: his “free pop” approachaside from “Bashful” and “Lgoyh”can be a touch muted. (www.kwes.info)
