Nov 13, 2020

Welcome to the 42nd Songs of the Week of 2020. We haven’t done a Songs of the Week in three weeks. Because of last week’s presidential election there were hardly any new songs of note released and we were too on edge awaiting the outcome to be decided to focus on new music. The week before was the run up to Halloween and there were certainly some worthy songs then, but for whatever reason we didn’t get Songs of the Week finished in time and abandoned it. So this week’s Songs of the Week covers the last three weeks, but mainly songs from this week and two weeks ago. More

By the third day of SXSW the lack of sleep was really catching up to us. As with the day before, we had to wake up early again to conduct a photo-shoot (three of them in fact), which again left no time for day parties. By the time the evening rolled around we were already burnt out, but still game to check out more bands. Alas, Friday offered little other than underwhelming sets, including ones by a shy Swedish duo and a surprisingly dark hyped Brooklyn band. More

The End: Peter Silberman of The Antlers on Endings and Death

"Given the choice, I think I'd prefer to die in space."

To end out the week, we ask The Antlers’ frontman Peter Silberman some questions about endings and death. The Antlers have released five full-length albums, their most recent being 2014’s Familiars, but this year Silberman released his debut solo album, Impermanence, on ANTI-. More

The Antlers

A Divided Mind

Jul 01, 2014

As a master storyteller, The Antlers’ Peter Silberman has developed an uncanny method of exploring the contours of his mind through the interpersonal dynamics in his songs, playing his characters off each other to poke at universal truths. More

The Antlers

Not awake yet

Nov 19, 2012

In 2011 The Antlers’ Burst Apart was one of the indie records to name drop. It was an outpouring of emotion so expressive and gut-wrenchingly gorgeous that it exposed the sensitive underbelly of a thousand hipsters’ collective psyche as well as resonating with the 21st century’s spiritual beatniks. On both sides of the Atlantic there was effusive praise across the world of music press. More

Reviews

Jun 16, 2014

For those of us expecting that The Antlers would continue on the path of their 2012 Undersea EP, a drawn-out batch of psychedelia, Familiars is an unexpected turn. More

Jul 27, 2012

After the cold sterility of Hospice and the forlorn but livelier Burst Apart, The Antlers deliver a four-song EP that occupies an entirely new space. The tension that held those full-lengths together and made them so compelling is absent from Undersea, but surprisingly, the meditative flow of the music feels complete, though not quite as intriguing. More

May 12, 2011

Hospice was a strange record. The first record featuring The Antlers in their current, trio alignment seemed to come onto the scene fully formed. And yet Burst Apart manages to be just as surprising without suffering the major lulls that marred Hospice. More

Hospice

Chris Drabick

Sep 04, 2009

While it may not be the only way, one manner in which great songs are created is necessity. In other words, the songwriter is compelled to write a song or songs, not by their record company or market forces, but inspired by a new love or heartbreak, or sometimes tragedy. Peter Silberman’s songs that populate The Antler’s Hospice are just such a batch. More
