Name: Springtime Carnivore

Alter Ego: Greta Morgan

Superhero With Most Similar Origin Story: Robin the Boy Wonder. According to the bio on Springtime Carnivore’s Facebook page, Greta Morgan once joined a traveling circus as an acrobat and tightrope walker. Before an eccentric millionaire vigilante could find her and take her under wing as his ward and faithful sidekick, she suffered a fall which broke her leg. While rehabbing from the injury, she rediscovered the old family piano and began writing music.

“I had an injury,” she explains. “It was sort of a metaphorical injury, and I just had an emotional outpouring in response to it. Then I started writing and recording all of these songs, and demo-ing them, and putting them out online. Which sort of feels like trying to put a transmission out to a foreign planet, or something. You put this transmission out, then wait and wait and wait to see if anyone answers. But then, people just started answering it.”

Location: Los Angeles, but not always.

“I’m kind of transient,” she says. “I feel the most time I spend in one place is about a month, if that. I don’t know. I just wind up finding reasons to leave a lot. Earlier this year I worked on a farm for a while, traveled to see my brother in Texas, spent some time in New Mexico, in Illinois. I kind of feel like I’m all over.”

“Los Angeles is so close to so many beautiful wilderness areas,” she continues. “Los Angeles, to me, is just the epicenter to be able to escape from, to be able to go to all of these different places. ... Although, there is a lot of really great music happening there right now.”

Mantra: A notecard tacked up in her rehearsal space reads “No Cheap Tricks.”

“When I put that up on my wall, I read that Raymond Carver had done that when he was writing,” she says. “I guess it sort of means not to fall back on the easiest option. At the time I’d been doing a lot of pop co-writing, with real pop artists, and I think there’s this kind of common belief that “What’s on the radio is sort of blah, so we can write a song that’s sort of blah and get by.” I guess it’s sort of like skating by the common denominator. So, to me, “No Cheap Tricks” means when I’m doing something that feels predictable, maybe it’s time to zag.”

Sound and Vision:

What’s Up With That Band Name, Anyway? One spring, Morgan spotted a coyote in her yard and the name popped into her head. It’s as simple as that.

“Now they’re my good luck charm,” she says. “Whenever I see one, I always get good band-related news.”
