First Aid Kit
Drunken Trees EP
Wichita
May 09, 2009 Web Exclusive
The debut EP from these two teenage sisters from outside Stockholm, Sweden, is steeped largely in the folk traditions of artists such as Vashti Bunyan and Nick Drake. Arrangements are spare, consisting mostly of picked acoustic guitar with little other adornment. The main driving force of the music is the sisters’ vocals, which often feature comfortable, soaring harmonies not unlike fellow U.S. sibling band Eisley. Some might call it pixie folk, but one has a sense that these sisters are destined for greater things than this descriptor suggests. There is a certain easy rhythm to their songwriting and a very natural way about which their voices combine. The current, wider distribution of the pair’s April 2008 Swedish-only release includes a beatific cover of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song,” and a three-song DVD of the ladies performing live in the Swedish forest.

A full album is set for release in September 2009. The confidence, wide range of obvious natural talent and exceptional promise of these songs is undeniable. The future for First Aid Kit feels star bright.
