The Chills
When this compilation of Chills singles, compilation appearances (the first side consists of their four tracks on the legendary Dunedin Double compilation that helped launch the ‘80s scene in New Zealand), and other stray tracks first appeared in 1986 on the venerable Flying Nun label on a 12-inch, it was only eight tracks long.

Before they were signed to Capitol, The Beach Boys entered Hite and Dorinda Morgan’s home studio in 1961 and recorded nine tracks ranging from songs that would go on to become beloved classics in their canon (particularly “Surfer Girl”) and other well-known ones like “Surfin’” to utter obscurities like “Lavender,” “Judy,” “Beach Boy Stomp (Karate),” and “What Is a Young Girl Made Of” that were only released decades later on collections like the 1991 compilation Lost and Found 1961-2, a set that consisted of 21 songs from these sessions.

Total Depravity, the fifth album by English indie rock quintet The Veils, is brilliantly haunting and ruefully grim. Fans of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and latter day Tom Waits will find much to love on this album, as the band’s chilly instrumentation and frontman Finn Andrews’ theatrical vocals evoke the Gothic tinge of the former, while the singer’s lyricism hews close to the devilish weirdness of the latter.
