Ellie Goulding‘s third studio album, Delirium, is by far her most pop facing, and it’s surprisingly compelling. The first track, “Intro (Delirium),” primes listeners for an ethereal, otherworldly experience. It’s haunting and mystical, perhaps even conjuring a recollection of Lisa Gerrard for the briefest, most fleeting moment. That flavor quickly proves unique among the 16 songs on the album, but what follows is far from disappointing.

Earlier in the year, Goulding stated in an interview that Delirium was a personal experiment of hers “to make a big pop album.” The result is certainly a mainstream success. Not every track is stellar, but it would be hard to argue that its any outright flop, either. “On My Mind”the fifth track and lead singleis the clear standout, though “Love Me Like You Do” already has widespread recognition from the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. The rest are slightly less inspired, but as a whole, the collection is ideal for a Friday or Saturday night out. Listen to it once while you get ready to hit the town, and then dance along to it into the wee hours of the night, for Delirium is eminently qualified to get you moving. (www.elliegoulding.com)
