On the eve of releasing his eighth solo studio album, (watch my moves), Kurt Vile has certainly established himself as a solo artist of renown. Following a short stint with The War on Drugs and a handful of early albums, Vile released five solo albums and a collaboration with Courtney Barnett (Lotta Sea Lice) on venerable indie label Matador. As he shares below, Vile jumped to Verve recently due to the label’s iconic reputation and the lure of a legendary list of artists that preceded him there. Clearly, creating room for Vile to release his longest album to date evidenced the label’s comfort in bringing him on board. More

If you only knew him from his music, you’d still have a pretty accurate notion of what it’s like to talk to Kurt Vile. Like his music, he is unassuming and unhurried, immediately engaging but unconcerned with your approval. More

A strange sort of math seems to underlie the chemistry of creativity. Any time two great artists are added to each other in equal measures, the product of their union almost always yields something less than what either of them could create on their own. More

Believing is Art

Kurt Vile‘s sixth full-length album, b’lieve i’m goin’ down, is rife with songs about hard-living drifters, informed by the works of authors ranging from Flannery O’Connor to Cormac McCarthy. Yet Vile, particularly enthralled by McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, couldn’t manage to read the latter’s most famous work, The Road, primarily due to its subject manner dealing explicitly with a young boy’s travails with his father through the apocalypse. Kurt Vile has worn a lot of hats over the course of three decades in music, but prophet of doom is a new one. The nearly hour long Back to Moon Beach is laughably described as an EP (extended play for sure), and consists primarily of outtakes recorded over the past few years. More

Kurt Vile has such a laconic, “aw shucks,” Mr. Cool thing going on with his presentation and apparently breezy attitude it is easy to miss the passions underpinning his seemingly effortless, but deceptively captivating music. His loose, dissembled and re-assembled songs can resemble clumsy, misshapen objects falling from the sky. His flat tone and deadpan vocals take his songs in their own unique direction every time and Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy comes to mind, in skewed poetic tenor, if not exactly musically. More

Kurt Vile’s latest album, Bottle It In, stretches across a long-winded 79 minutes. An album of such length would typically meet a great deal of criticisms, a drawn-out and wearisome divergence of windows-down freeway rock: this is Vile’s forte, though, and his musters and oddball sentences are revered and cherished, his vocal presence undemanding but completely addictive. Smoke Ring for My Halo remains a lasting statement of purpose and Wakin on a Pretty Daze was a massively generous comfort blanket of an album, but with b’lieve i’m goin down…, Kurt Vile finally has gotten down to the essence of what he’s been searching for since the beginning. More

On Wakin on a Pretty Daze, the tension between self-consciousness and bliss permeates every aspect of every song. More
