Last month Ryley Walker released The Lillywhite Sessions, in which he took an unreleased Dave Matthews Band album from 2001 and covered it track-for-track. Walker wasn’t doing it ironically, he was genuinely a Dave Matthews fan in his youth, and his version also took the songs in interesting new directions, such as free jazz. More

This the closest we’ve come in awhile to skipping Songs of the Week due to a lack of truly worthy songs. But we were able to at least come up with a Top 7 (as opposed to our usual Top 10), even if it includes two covers and two album tracks. One thing that saved it was our #1 song, which was released this morning. More

Songs of the Week is fairly easy to put together, there are obviously standout tracks and it’s just a case of working out the order. Other weeks there are few great tracks and it’s a real struggle. This week there was an obvious #1 in Beach House and then there were so, so many other tracks to decide between to come up with a Top 10. More

The pitch for Ryley Walker’s Course in Fable is unusual and slightly befuddling: A Chicago-bred, New York-based troubadour channels his ambitious heroes and shoots to craft swirling progressive arrangements that go beyond the obvious. Though it occasionally misses this lofty mark, it works well enough. More

Everyone’s favorite jester-come-jazz/folk troubadour, Ryley Walker, returns after 2016’s well-received Golden Sings That Have Been Sung with an equally hazily idiosyncratic collection. The opener, “In Castle Dome,” develops a lethargic psych saunter that dominates the album’s feel and rhythm. More
