Welcome to the 26th Songs of the Week of 2022. We didn’t do a Songs of the Week last week as pickings were slim in the run up to the long July 4th weekend, so this week’s list covers songs from the last two weeks. Thus we have a supersized Top 15. The list includes two pro-choice songs. More

Welcome to the tenth Songs of the Week of 2022. It was without a doubt the strongest week for new tracks so far this year. Some of our all time favorite artists put out new songs this week and there were several amazing songs that were seven or eight minutes long. There was much debate on what should make the main list and the best we could narrow it down to was a Top 15. More

This week’s Songs of the Week was almost just a Top 8. However two fun, but seriously inessential, songs from the Lego Movie 2 soundtrack skated in at the bottom of the list. Veteran Scottish rockers Idlewild surprised us with an interesting new song, even though we admittedly haven’t paid much attention to their last few albums. More

Superorganism are a promising new multi-national band based in London. They feature members from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and the U.K. and their self-titled debut album came out in March via Domino. Last night they stopped by Conan to perform “Everybody Wants to Be Famous.” The delightfully quirky performance began with singer Orono Noguchi sitting in a lawn chair, wearing sunglasses, and it progressed from there. Hello again. We haven’t done a Songs of the Week for almost five weeks, since June 9. We were on vacation from mid to late June and then when we returned there really weren’t enough compelling songs last week to justify doing Songs of the Week lists, mainly because of the July 4th holiday being smack dab in the middle of the week and so labels mainly avoided sharing new songs. Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz released a new album, The Now Now, last month via Warner Bros. Now they have shared a pair of remixes for the album’s first single, “Humility,” via videos for each remix. DJ Koze‘s version is a more standard remix and the video just features a warped version of the album’s artwork. The remix by Superorganism, however, is more radical, with that band’s singer Orono Noguchi contributing new vocals and appearing in a remixed version of the song’s video. More

It was a crazy good week for new songs. So much so that we could only narrow down this week’s Songs of the Week to 12 tracks, as opposed to our normal 10. Speedy Ortiz almost made the list with “Lucky 88,” the first single off their newly announced new album Twerp Verse, but then it would’ve been 13 songs and we gave into superstition. More

On record, Orono Noguchi sounds so nonchalant that she almost seems bored of being in a band. In person, she’s nothing like that. We’re speaking in the middle of Superorganism‘s first European tour and a packed day for Orono, the band’s lead singer, which has included a morning recording session, but she’s still animated and engaging. When Superorganism first started making noise on the indie scene back in 2017 and 2018 they were imagined as “the Internet’s band,” a group whose cut-and-paste indie pop, hyper-online references, and patchwork songwriting approach captured the era’s manic online culture. More

With their membership spread across multiple continents, it makes sense that Superorganism would draw from a wide range of influences. Their sound is every bit a brightly-colored collage as their video aesthetic: a blend of modern meme imagery and Windows 95-era nostalgia. More
