FOMO. Fear Of Missing Out. At a festival the size of SXSW, the terror that someone—somewhere—might be having a better time than you is an ever-pressing concern. Well, everywhere but at Under the Radar’s three-day parties. I realize my option is somewhat suspect, seeing as they sign my paychecks, but believe me when I say that, for at least three days of the fest, there was nowhere else I would have rather been than The Flamingo Cantina in Austin, Texas. Band Hints At Darker Full-Length

The Most Anticipated Albums of 2010 section in Under the Radar's Winter 2010 Issue includes a short article on The Drums' debut album. We've now posted the full Q&A of that interview with the band. I caught up with Brooklyn via Florida act The Drums in mid-January at their East Williamsburg apartment, somewhere between the moribund Marcy projects and the urbane bastion of hipness that is Bedford Avenue. Apropos, given that the band seem like misfits in today's Brooklyn scene, their insular milieu wedged somewhere between such somber Factory Records acts as The Wake and blithe '50s surf culture dreams. By the third day of SXSW the lack of sleep was really catching up to us. As with the day before, we had to wake up early again to conduct a photo-shoot (three of them in fact), which again left no time for day parties. By the time the evening rolled around we were already burnt out, but still game to check out more bands. Alas, Friday offered little other than underwhelming sets, including ones by a shy Swedish duo and a surprisingly dark hyped Brooklyn band. More

"We're driven by melody. If we're writing a song, and it isn't driven by a rush of melody, we throw it out. When we put something out, we hope it makes you flutter just a little bit," says Drums frontman Jonathan Pierce. Mission accomplished on the band's aptly named Summer-time! EP. More

Coachella 2011 Day One Report – Cut Copy, Odd Future, Tame Imapala, Interpol, and more
Apr 16, 2011
By Mark Redfern
Day one of Coachella 2011 displayed several improvements over last year. There was less of a crowd (even though it was sold out this year, they put more of a limitation on how many tickets could be sold). Security was tighter and parking seemed less of a pain. And it even seemed as though the Mojave and Gobi tents were a little bigger this year and able to accommodate more fans. Highlights of the day included two bands from down under and some soft rockers; where-as two notable artists stormed off the stage. More

Summertime and escapism were the themes that pervaded The Drums' debut EP Summertime! The sweet rush of "Saddest Summer" and their U.K. hit "Let's Go Surfing" were evocative of innocent summers long gone, rife with lithe melodies and blithe handclaps. More

Summertime! EP
Twenty Seven
Oct 30, 2009
By Frank Valish
On its debut EP, Brooklyn-based quartet The Drums makes music that, strangely, is influenced by both Factory Records and The Shangri-Las. The music is stripped down and simplistic, with songs often being driven by a lone guitar or bass line, and frequently relying on the rhythmic devices of handclaps and finger snaps. More
