Hana Vu
How Many Times Have You Driven By EP

For a genius, Hana Vu is sure young. The 18-year-old’s debut EP, How Many Times Have You Driven By, is an incredibly self-assured, individual collection. Her contralto beckon and sour, dissonant guitar lines endow her music with a solemnity that doesn’t at all betray her age.
“Team,” one of four bonus tracks available aside the EP, exemplifies Vu’s approach. On this song, her intermeshed, choir-like gospel lines merge with an inescapable guitar line that’s just out of tune enough to unsettle without aggravating. The title track’s clear-as-night, reverb-heavy guitar line gallops over layers of hymnal singing that give Vu’s arrangement a ghastly, almost holy feel. Even on the most melodic and traditionally catchy of the bunch, “Cool,” Vu subverts dream pop and hip-hop standards with a syrupy, creeping chillness. Her brilliance comes from rebellion. In other words, she’s doing what teenagers do best. (www.hanavu.bandcamp.com)
