Adult friendships can get weird and Klown Forever is committed to proving it. When happily single Casper (Casper Christensen) moves from Copenhagen to sunny Los Angeles his best friend Frank (Frank Hvam), previously obliviously ensconced in domestic life with his young family, is astonished and hurt. In an effort to repair the friendship, Frank heads to sunny California to reconnect with Casper. Through a series of unlikely and hilariously disturbing events, the two men eventually succeed in repairing their relationship.
When watching Klown Forever, as with its predecessor Klown, it’s hard to avoid feeling that you’re missing a lot of context. Centering around characters established in a wildly popular Danish TV comedy of the same name, the experience is something like coming into a random episode of a sitcom. Casper and Frank’s patter, behavior, hijinks - in general, their world - are well established and understood, and the story unfolds within these parameters of possibility. This ease is oddly comforting, even for the uninitiated, and despite the absurd and raunchy action at hand. In fact, in a movie where someone’s ass getting licked by a Great Dane is the least aggressive joke, the warm blanket of vague familiarity is very welcome. Klown Forever doesn’t really care how well you know Casper and Frank’s world, resting on faith that there’s enough to hold interest without laying out the extended circumstances. And rightfully so, as the overall takeaway is pleasant and moderately chuckle-eliciting. Though it is hard to escape a bit of FOMO, leaving suspicion the experience could be enhanced were we in on the inside jokes.
