Over a century ago, the six-hour French silent film Tih-Minh first met audiences in 1919 through twelve serialized chapters. Moving from its characters living in palatial splendor to the gambling tables of Monte Carlo and beyond, Tih-Minh offered an escape to exotic locales and intriguing experiences that would likely have been tantalizing for its early-century viewers. The film’s opening sequence, both useful and amusing, introduces its key characters with live-action headshots that provide glimpses at the personalities driving the segments to follow.

Adventurer Jacques d’Athys (René Cresté) returns to France from an expedition in Indochina with his bride-to-be, Tih-Minh (Mary Harald), and his servant Placido (Georges Biscot), who provides comic relief along with his fiancée Rosette (Jeanne Rollette). A book that offers clues to hidden treasure as well as government intelligence sets off a struggle between Jacques and the kidnappers, mercenaries, and hypnotists that will involve Tih-Minh in their efforts to get to the treasure. Throughout, Kino Lorber’s gorgeous restoration is entrancing, promising and delivering action and intrigue to the very end.
