Wavves

“Post Acid” Video

Aug 26, 2010

San Diego noise-punk trio Wavves and Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound released the music video for King of the Beach single “Post Acid” today. During the clip, the band has a gnarly close encounter of the third kind. Dancing, rocking, fashion/peep shows, and skateboarding get the interstellar party thumpin’. Our little green man even stage dives at one point. The lo-fi sfx are funny and former MTV VJ John Norris makes a cameo. It was directed by the infamous skate documentarian Patrick O’Dell. Watch above. Check out tour dates at the group’s MySpace.

Dead Man’s Bones: “Pa Pa Power” Video

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from the L.A.-based duo Dead Man’s Bones (aka thespians Zach Shields and Ryan Gosling). Their macabre doo-wop debut, Dead Man’s Bones came out last October on Anti-, but here’s a brand-new music video for “Pa Pa Power.” The clip (below) sees the actors and A Warm Glass of Milk Choir perform for the elderly residents of a special needs center in Chino Hills, Calif. called Chancellor Place.

You may have to choke back some tears at the end, because the visuals are quite poignant. Of course, there’s also some spookiness to be unearthed. (Hey, is it Halloween yet, everyone?) The band self-directed the vid. DMB will play at the L.A. State Historic Park for FYF Fest on September 4. (Via P4k.tv.)

El Guincho

“FM Tan Sexy” MP3

Aug 26, 2010

El Guincho had the Tropicália thing down for Alegranza!. Listening to “FM Tan Sexy” from his forthcoming third full-length, Pop Negro, it sounds like Pablo Díaz-Reix has made his life simpler by aiming for straight-ahead ‘80s/‘90s pop. This is still “summer music,” but it’s less like a whirling, kaleidoscopic spray of jungle heat and more like a cool dip in the ocean. Listen to “FM Tan Sexy” above. This track (#6) follows debut single/rousing opener, “Bombay.” U.S. tour dates announced soon. Pop Negro is available on LP, CD and digital download on September 14 via Young Turks. Pre-order here.

Jens Lekman

Jens Lekman As Kraftwerk Gets Random on Australian Game Show ‘Spicks and Specks’ Video

Huh… Now, this is strange. After dropping “The End of the World Is Bigger Than Love” on us all, Swedish indie-pop singer-songwriter Jens Lekman appeared on the Australian comedy music quiz show Spicks and Specks earlier this month, dressed like Kraftwerk’s Florian Schneider (WTF?) to sing lines from Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen‘s Hedda Gabler, set to the melodies of Haddaway’s “What Is Love,” the Zorba the Greek theme, et al.. Strange stuff for sure, but stick around for a funny tale about Drew Barrymore’s mad leg-humping skills. They don’t call Wednesday “Hump Day” for nothing, folks. (Via TwentyFourBit/Stereogum.)

Lætitia Sadier

“One Million Year Trip” MP3

Aug 25, 2010

Stereolab frontwoman Lætitia Sadier is striking out on her own on September 21 with The Trip. This is her first “proper” solo LP and Drag City will release it. Check out the krautrock-y/dream-pop opening cut, “One Million Year Trip.” The somber lyrics grapple with the suicide of Sadier’s sister. In related news, Stereolab’s twelfth full-length, Not Music, drops November 16, also via Drag City. Pre-order The Trip here and Not Music here.

Beach House: “White Moon” MP3 Stream

Baltimore dream-pop duo Beach House recently dropped an iTunes Sessions EP. It’s a nice document of their expanded live lineup. On the release, they recorded tweaked takes on five old tunes, and one brand-new cut: “White Moon.” Stream the tropical, midtempo song below. They performed as a trio this time.

The EP is out now and also sports bare versions of “Walk in the Park,” “Norway,” “Silver Soul,” and “Real Love” from their excellent third LP, Teen Dream. The stone-cold Devotion classic “Gila,” also shows up. The threesome produced and mixed the EP with Chris Coady (TV on the Radio, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Marissa Nadler, Islands).

Band guitarist/keyboardist Alex Scally notes, “During the week or two of sound-checks leading up to the recording, we worked through the songs and attempted to rewrite them with fewer and different tones. Listeners can judge whether or not we were able to make these ‘stripped-down’ versions mean something.”

BH is in Europe now, and later this month the group will start hanging out with Vampire Weekend and Dum Dum Girls for a North American jaunt (via P4k.)

Lia Ices

“Grown Unknown” MP3

Aug 24, 2010

Brooklyn-via-Vermont avant-pop artist Lia Ices joins Jagjaguwar‘s venerable stable of artists this summer for her upcoming, as-yet-untitled sophomore LP. Her debut album, Hecima (2008), is available via Rare Book Room. The elegant melodies Ices makes are worth your attention. One such song is “Grown Unknown,” available to stream or download above. Her ethereal vox is coaxed along by light guitar, handclaps, and strings. Captivating stuff, music fans. See upcoming concerts at Ices’ website. Below, you’ll find a bonus music video for Hecima‘s “Half Life.”
