Despite headliners U2 having to cancel their appearance, Glastonbury, one of the biggest and greatest music festivals, still seems to have been wholly successful this past weekend (even the English weather cooperated). There were many surprises at the 40th Glastonbury, including Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood performing "Karma Police"; Shakira covering The xx's "Islands"; Stevie Wonder paying a tribute to Michael Jackson, and many more. Divan Orange is the site of Pop Montreal’s afternoon shows, but in my now-daily three-step process (recover, report, refuel), I missed No Joy, aka Laura Lloyd and Jasamine White-Gluz. Formerly of Bad Flirt (White-Gluz’s longtime labour of love, which expanded from a solo project to a rock quintet that released a pretty hot LP in ’08), the ladies have whole-heartedly joined the shoegazing revival, submerging their pop tunes and black-angel vocals in dense, creaky noise. Day two of Coachella 2010 alas offered few highlights. This year Coachella has put way too many great artists on Sunday's bill, which will inevitably lead to a lot of Sophie's Choice-like moments of picking between which favorite artists to see. Whereas Saturday's bill suffered from a lack of must see artists, there was no shortage of artists worth checking out, it's just that few of them delivered. Matters were not helped by the fact that the best set I saw was also the first set I saw. Almost everything underwhelmed after that. More
