alt-J on “The Dream”

Dreams and Details

Feb 09, 2022

Joe Newman from alt-J grins as he shows me a candy tangerine Fender Telecaster. “It looks left-handed but it’s not,” he says over a Zoom call. “It’s just that the video is reversed.” This is a small detail, but an important one. Newman plays guitar and sings lead vocals for the British three-piece. Over Britain’s lockdown he picked up a few guitars, which are now displayed in his “man cave.” More

Hymns and Harmony

alt-J‘s music was hauntingly echoing off Ely Cathedrals’ aged walls, as guitarist/vocalist Joe Newman, drummer Thom Green, and keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton stood inside and played the notes to their new song “Pleader.” More

Read some of the reviews of alt-J‘s full-length debut, 2012’s An Awesome Wave, and you’ll get a sense of how difficult it is for even seasoned music critics to describe the band’s sound. Folk music mixed with hip-hop beats? Electronic indie dub? Experimental choral music? All of the terms were attached to the band, and none of them make any more sense now than they did then. With This Is All Yours, their sophomore release, the task becomes even more difficult.

Fractal Rock: Gus Unger-Hamilton and Joe Newman on The Band's Breakout Year and Winning the Mercury Prize

Jan 11, 2013

Recent Mercury Prize winners Alt-J don’t skimp on the weird. Their offbeat debut An Awesome Wave skitters across genresa jittery wash of soulful groves, a cappella harmonies, and soaring piano and guitar lines colliding with pop culture references ‘a plenty. The assemblage of these elements seems to beg the question: What is this? Lit pop? (The album title is a reference to American Psycho.) Art rock? (Three-fourths of the band studied art at university.) Radiohead 2.0? (The band counts Thom Yorke as a major influence.) Who knows? More

One wouldn’t assume that a series of zeroes and ones could be sung in a convincing, let alone catchy, refrain. It might also seem equally impossible to sing a revolutionary new rendition of a song as overexposed as “The House of the Rising Sun.” Yet alt-J do all that and more on their new LP, Relaxer. More

“Triangles are my favorite shape/three points where two lines meet,” guitarist Joe Newman sings in “Tessellate,” offering up one explanation into why this Cambridgeshire, U.K. band would name themselves after the Mac keyboard shortcut that produces a triangle shape. An Awesome Wave, alt-J’s debut record of offbeat love songs and weird odes to geometry, has already become a surprise hit in their native country.
