Supports “Sound Strike” Effort

When Arizona’s controversial immigration law was announced, many musicians organized in Sound Strike, an effort spearheaded by Zack de la Rocha to put economical pressure to repeal the law. Charlie Levy, an independent concert promoter based out of Phoenix addressed the musicians in an open letter, requesting that rather than boycott the state the musicians use their performances to speak out against the law. Today, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes/Monsters of Folk) replied. We have his letter.

Haiti is still recovering from January's devastating earthquake. Aiding the recovery efforts is a group of musicians and artists who are auctioning off exclusive items to benefit the nation. The project, called Crafts For a Cause, is spearheaded by Binki Shapiro of Little Joy and will go live on March 15th. Among the items up for bidding, an original song by Mark Ronson, a camera painted by Drew Barrymore, and a shirt designed by M. Ward. Other artists involved include: Jenny Lewis, Tegan & Sara, Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, Feist, Conor Obest, Aziz Ansari, Devendra Banhart, Cat Power, Daft Punk, Natalie Portman, The Strokes, and many others. Your eyes don't deceive you. Monsters of Folk—aka Conor Oberst, My Morning Jacket's Jim James, M. Ward, and producer/engineer Mike Mogis is a reality! The verdict is still out and whether this will be a runaway Traveling Wilburys-like success or a M.O.R. Highwaymen-esque novelty. The trio of songwriters are certainly in BFF material. They've joined each other on and offstage, been Under the Radar favorites, and covered each others' songs, but the build-up to this was questionable at best. More
