Day three of Coachella 2010 more than made up for a lackluster day two, with set after set of strong artists and ending with perhaps the three best performances of the whole festival, all in a row: Pavement, Thom Yorke, and Gorillaz. It would have been nice if the wealth of great artists had been spread out a little bit more over the three days, but then again, Sunday wouldn't have been so strong if they had scheduled it that way. Here's what I saw on the last day of Coachella: Local Natives, Owen Pallett, Mayer Hawthorne, Deerhunter, Florence and the Machine, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jonsi, Spoon, Phoenix, Pavement, Thom Yorke, and Gorillaz. A Conversation Between Bradford Cox and Laetitia Sadier
Oct 11, 2010
By John Everhart (Intro by and Moderated by)
Deerhunter and Atlas Sound's Bradford Cox has long professed his love for Stereolab, in particular 1999's Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night, his favorite album by the band. He went so far as to effusively explicate upon its merits on a Deerhunter blog post back in 2007. In an impassioned manner akin to the prime years of the fiery late gonzo journalist Lester Bangs, he also excoriated the publications that panned the album. More

Listening to Deerhunter’s second and third albums (Cryptograms and Microcastles) was kind of like watching Neo make that first jump in The Matrix: there was just such a “holy shit”-ness to it all. Here was a band with one record under its belt growing up under our very ears. The distance they traveled over the course of tracks—much less whole albums—was astonishing. On their fourth record (though frontman Bradford Cox seems to record roughly as much as Tupac in his heyday), Deerhunter has settled into a comfortable, yet still thrilling, space. More

Kurt Cobain once remarked caustically that he would only wear a tie-dyed t-shirt if it were made with "the urine of Phil Collins and the blood of Jerry Garcia." Perhaps he was rolling over in his grave when Sufjan Stevens and his band opened the main stage of ATP day 2 decked out in oversized tie-dyes. Delivering a set comprised of 2004's Seven Swans from start to finish, Stevens announced that, "this is a set for your hangovers." More
