Welcome to the 38th Songs of the Week of 2020. This was the week where those on the left mourned the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and worried about the future of the Supreme Court, as her dying wish to have her replacement be appointed by the next president was ignored by hypocritical Republicans who blocked President Obama’s Supreme Court pick because it was an election year. As a live performer, Bruce Springsteen has been burning down the road for the last 40 years, and judging by the fact that he played the longest show of his career in 2012, it appears that he still has a lot of gas left in the tank. As a songwriter and recording artist, however, he’s running on reserves. Springsteen’s latest studio album, High Hopes, being promoted as his 18th officially, is a mixed bag of covers, re-workings of songs that have appeared elsewhere, and previously unreleased material written for other projects. On the heels of last fall’s Occupy Wall Street protests arrives Bruce Springsteen‘s Wrecking Ball, his most vibrant studio album of original material since 1984’s Born in the U.S.A. This time the characters in the songs direct their ire toward fat-cat bankers and “robber barons…whose crimes have gone unpunished.” If Springsteen’s narrative touch as a songwriter is no longer as sharp as it once was, it remains intact as an album-maker. Wrecking Ball‘s strength exists in its overarching narrative and sequencing—the relationships between the songs and their characters, and the shift in mood as the album progresses toward more spiritual themes. Bruce Springsteen’s 1978 album Darkness on the Edge of Town didn’t put him on the covers of Time and Newsweek; 1975’s Born to Run did. Darkness didn’t give him his first Top 10 single; 1980’s The River did with “Hungry Heart.” Darkness didn’t inspire a tribute album, as 1982’s Nebraska did. And these days, indie artists are more apt to cover songs from Springsteen’s 1984 blockbuster Born in the U.S.A. than anything from Darkness. So why is an hour-and-a-half documentary on the making of Darkness on the Edge of Town premiering on HBO tonight? More
