Interviews

Sep 24, 2021

Oh, the conversations, inventions, ideas, and discoveries one can enjoy when sitting with a friend, watching a movie. It may seem like an obvious or even commonplace experience to consider, but as one gets older, further and further removed from school and responsibility-less free time, it can be more and more difficult to just sit with a friend and watch a film. Not to mention during a global pandemic when it can be frowned upon socially and public-health-wise even to sit together with a pal. Yet, the simple act is exactly what the friends and artists, Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine, did in a cabin in Upstate New York recently. The result of which is a new 14-track record, A Beginner’s Mind, out today and inspired almost entirely by movies the two watched together, enraptured. More

From the singular artist who brought you one of the best albums this century in Carrie & Lowell, one of the rare perfect songs in “John Wayne Gacy Jr.,” and, perhaps most importantly, the most joyous festive song of our era with “Christmas Unicorn,” comes Javelin. More

An outtakes and demos album can turn into a series of letdowns as you discover why songs that didn’t make the cut and alternates of some of your favorite tunes from the original hadn’t been shared hitherto. More

May 30, 2017

Sufjan Stevens’ unpredictability in concert follows from an eclectic artistic spirit, one so regularly forged and informed by the voices of personal history. He’s as prone to folding into a pocket of quiet acoustic soul searching as he is to opening up the floodgates of orchestral and electronic embellishment that transcends a room. More

Apr 18, 2016

Ten years have passed since Sufjan Stevens released Illinois, a concept album rooted in themes surrounding the U.S. state of the same name, supposedly his second instalment in a series of such records that would explore each state. More

There’s a common phrase placed on art: “a meditation on death,” which makes both the art and the act of grieving and realization of mortality seem like a gentle breeze. More

Dec 11, 2012

Five long years stretched between proper Sufjan Stevens albums, from 2005’s breakout Illinois to 2010’s heartbreaking The Age of Adz, but for those who believe that he is anything but prolific, Asthmatic Kitty presents the second compilation of Stevens’ Christmas EPs. Stevens somehow found time each year to explore the tensions between the garish commercialism and tradition and religious core of Christmas. More

For those who are hoping The BQE represents the long-awaited next installment in Sufjan Stevens’ slow trek across the U. S. of A, look elsewhere. For those who are hoping to get some of Stevens’ trademark Americana lyrics and witty storytelling, you, too, are barking up the wrong tree. More

Oct 21, 2009

Instead of waiting in the wings for the lights to go down on the stage of New York’s Bowery Ballroom, Sufjan Stevens, after sound-checking his own equipment, nonchalantly picked up his banjo and began to strum the first chords of “The Mistress Witch From McClure.” Dressed in a jersey T-shirt and jeans with a camouflage baseball cap tucked in his back pocket, this shy boy from Michigan is still modest, despite his four consecutive New York shows that sold out instantly. Kurt Cobain once remarked caustically that he would only wear a tie-dyed t-shirt if it were made with “the urine of Phil Collins and the blood of Jerry Garcia.” Perhaps he was rolling over in his grave when Sufjan Stevens and his band opened the main stage of ATP day 2 decked out in oversized tie-dyes. Delivering a set comprised of 2004’s Seven Swans from start to finish, Stevens announced that, “this is a set for your hangovers.” More
